Today’s manufacturing environment is a major source of high-tech innovation and
cutting-edge productivity that offers a wide variety of career opportunities for the
occupationally– qualified. The most recent ten year employment projections by the
U.S. Labor Department indicate that between 2002 and 2012 there will be 2.4 million skilled production jobs available for machinists, machine assemblers/
operators, systems operators and technicians.
Just as manufacturing is key to the economic vitality of the country, it is equally
crucial to the prosperity of Greenville County - home to over 600 manufacturers
employing in excess of 48,000 people. More than twenty percent of the local workforce has jobs in this field which accounts for approximately eighty percent of the
region’s capital investment. Furthermore, the Upstate has seventy-five percent
more manufacturing jobs than the average American community. *

Consequently, local business, workforce development partners and educational
facilities are actively engaged in developing an industry-focused advanced manufacturing program aimed at meeting the emerging and future demands of this field.
