The new owner of Chelsea, Todd Boehly, admits the Premier League big six will soon welcome a new addition in the form of Newcastle United.

Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital completed their 4.25 billionChelseatakeover last month after Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich was forced to put the Blues up for sale after the invasion of Ukraine. Boehly now has the keys to one of the biggest football clubs in the world but admitsNewcastlewill soon be competing on the same playing field after their own change of ownership.

The big six will become the big seven with the Saudi deal for Newcastle, Boehly told the SuperReturn International private equity conference in Berlin on Wednesday. There is going to be opportunity for everyone to win.

Newcastle supporters will undoubtedly want to rival the likes of Chelsea and other Premier League heavyweights in years to come but a rebuild of that nature will take time given the competitive nature of Englands top flight these days.

Eddie Howe himself has been quick to downplay talk of imminent success, preferring to keep targets for next season between him and his players. The Magpies boss has also made no secret of his desire to keep those targets realistic in the short term.

I would rather these things stay internal than external because we have to also manage expectations, Howe said back in May. We dont want to play under an unnecessary burden or unnecessary pressure that hampers our performance. I would prefer to keep things in-house.

Newcastle have endured a slow start to the transfer window with key targets such as Sven Botman being pursued by European clubs. The Dutch defender looks destined for AC Milan this summer, which shows while Newcastle have the funds to compete with any club in the world, theyre lacking in stature at present.

Nevertheless, it is a good sign that the worlds biggest and brightest clubs are taking note of the new era on Tyneside. The Saudi ownership may have got themselves a bargain paying 300m for Newcastle rather than parting ways with 4 billion for the Blues.
