Chelsea transfer target Jules Kounde set for surgery with Sevilla centre-back needing to correct long-term issue in a huge blow for Thomas Tuchel

Chelseas hopes of landing Sevilla defender Jules Kounde have been dealt a blow, with the centre-back needing surgery to fix a long-term problem.

The 23-year-old started Frances 1-0 defeat to Croatia in the Nations League on Monday night, before being replaced by Benjamin Pavard at half-time.

Kounde was previously an unused substitute in Les Bleus previous two outings this month, and Didier Deschamps revealed afterwards that it was not a tactical decision to replace him.

I knew very well his physical condition today, Deschamps said when asked why Kounde needed to be taken off.

Tomorrow [Tuesday] he will have a [surgical] intervention because he has a problem that has been going on for several months.

Details of his blow were not fully explained by Deschamps, but reports in France claim it is a hamstring problem.

News of Koundes injury will come as a huge blow for Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, who was keen to secure the services of the defender this summer.

Chelseas new owner ToddBoehly is set to hand Tuchel a 200million transfer budget to strengthen his squad following the takeover of the club, and Tuchel had Kounde top of his list.

A regular for Sevilla, the centre-back made his France debut last year, and is understood to be keen on a move to the Premier League.

It remains unclear as to the extent of the injury, but it will likely put a damper on a switch to west London this summer.

Kounde had been earmarked as a replacement for Antonio Rudiger.

The German, 29,left Stamford Bridge to join Real Madrid on a free transfer, following the expiry of his contract.

Chelsea are also in the market for a replacement for Andreas Christensen, who also leaves Tuchels side after ten years as a Blue.

Christensen isexpected to join Barcelonaand, given Koundes woes, Chelsea are likely to turn to other targets.

Inter Milans Milan Skriniar and Napolis Kalidou Koulibalycould be possible alternatives to the Frenchman.
